ABOUT S.S.I.
Sandalwood history dales back to 1792 where Tipu Sultan, Ruler of Mysore state declared it as Royal Tree. Sandalwood was one time considered as main source of economy where the entire state budget was planned based on Sandalwood. (Book Ref: 2017 Gem of Penisular India: Sandalwood ) . Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album L) or “Srigandha” tree isa pride of our nation sandal so it symbolizes our state ‘Karnataka’ KANNDANADU GANDADA BEEDU, Globally. The heartwood of the tree and the oil is in great demand for its high economic value.
Legal Permissions
As per the Karnataka forest (amended) 2001 section 108 FEE l6 F.S.W. the rower himself as owner of the tree. To encourage farmers and to take elevate the cultivation of Sandalwood on conm1ercial scale.
Area of Cultivation
After liberalization of sandalwood act, farmers are very much interested and cultivating sandalwood in their farm and barren lands, along with horticulture/agriculture crops with different agro forestry models.
Demand & Supply
There is a demand of sandalwood in the tune of 20,000 Metric tons and oil is estimated to 1000 tons in the international markets. But the supply is only in past, Indian sandal wood had monopoly in trade and 90% supply was from India.
Role of Sandalwood Society
To give more impetus to this prime species of our country, the Sandalwood Society of India has been formed with the objectives of providing an opportunity and a platform for the farmers to interact with the enhancement techniques of the Sandalwood production and its usage through holistic development in various parts of the country.
Contributions from Sandalwood Society
Ever since the society came into existence (2015), it has become the only source or platform for all matters related sandalwood. As of today, 400 registered members and 1500+ non members who are all growers are part of the Its base member’s strength is showing increasing trend month after month, year after year.
Sandalwood Knowledge Park
The grand vision is to create a Sandalwood knowledge Park in the rural district of Bangalore where it becomes a center of innovation/ excellence for all sandalwood related matters. This involves in the development of various demonstration centers like different cultivation methods, showcasing different type of plantation, Nursery Development ,

Sandalwood Society of India is a non-profit organization, focusing on Production, Utility, Educational Research, Training and Developmental activities related to Sandalwood and allied species. The organization will address various qualitative and quantitative enhancement techniques of the Sandalwood production and its usage through holistic development in various parts of the country.
