ABOUT SANDALWOOD SOCIETY OF INDIA
Sandalwood Society of India (SSI) is a registered body vide registration no :SOR/GNR/139/2014-15 under article 19 (1) (c) constitution of India under Karnataka Society’s Registration Act 1960. The objective of the society is to meet the aspirations of the farmers, entrepreneurs, and end users, keeping in mind the global scenario of sandalwood production & demand by involvement of all the stakeholders. Further the focus has been given in the context of paradigma for the natural products worldwide to the extent of 10-15% per annum particularly sandalwood and its allied products. The concept of production of natural sandalwood from soil to oil by utilizing the lab to land and ends up with value added products chain viz. Toiletries,cosmeticals, neutraciticals, ayurveda, pharma preparations including high end life style products.
The society was formed with a mission to produce natural, sustainable, and legal by ethically source of sandalwood and end products to meet global standard quality by the involvement of farmers, entrepreneurs, scientists, technologists and end users. Our society is purely a non profit organization which is actively involved with all types of Sandalwood growers across the country having headquarters in Bangalore and regional offices in Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmadabad, Lattur Maharashtra , Bhuvaneswara, Jodhpur and Jorhat. So far
0ur society has taken up initiation to enlarge private patter land sandalwood plantation to the tune of over 90,000 acres across the country. The rate of annual growth of plantation is more than 10% .
Society is equipped with senior scientists with more than 30 years of experience in sandalwood and other agro forestry species, retired IFS officers, technocrats and industrialists. The society’s knowledge bank is tremendously helping farmers who regularly seek help in all cultivation & preservation aspects. SSI is also involved in capacity building of private sandalwood nurseries under Karnataka Forest Department. This involves various other species like red sanders, bamboo and other fast growing forestry species.
SSI has already discussed with Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Giriraj Singh,Union Minister, Shri Sripad S Naik to establish sandalwood knowledge parks in the states of Karnataka, Telangana, Andra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Bihar.
Sandalwood Society of India is conducting national/regional conferences on sandalwood thereby creating a perfect platform for addressing common issues like supply of quality planting material (qpm), pest management, and agro forestry in sandalwood plantation, trade, policy issues, logistics & protection regularly, since the gestation period of sandalwood for harvesting spread over 20-30 years.
Sandalwood Society of India has proposed Sandalwood Knowledge Parks in
the states of Karnataka, Telangana & Andra Pradesh.
We frequently conduct training programs for farmers from different states. We have so far trained more than 3000 farmers and numbers are growing. SSI has already delivered capacity building training to more than 2000 forest officers and field staff of Karnataka Forest Department on sandalwood. Similar programs can be conducted in the states if Telangala, Andra Pradesh, Tamilnadu & Puducherry. This not only enhances the internal capacity of Forest Department, it will help forest officials to help /train farmers as a ‘train the trainer’ concept.
